Paint Popsicles are a cool sensory activity for the summer or outdoor art! They’re vibrant, easy to make, and super fun to paint!

Get ready for some serious fun with these Rainbow Paint Popsicles! Inspired by the magic of summer crafts and the bright colors of the rainbow, these paint popsicles don’t take much time to make but will provide a good amount of entertainment for you and your kids.

Rainbow paint popsicles inspire creativity as children experiment with learning colors, making patterns, and exploring different ways to paint with them.

Although we’ve made paint popsicles before, these rainbow-themed ones were inspired by our friend over IG @friendsartlab!

How to make Rainbow Paint Popsicles:

  1. Layer the Paint: Start layering the paint in the Dixie cups, one color at a time. We used red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple paints! All of our paint popsicles are in rainbow order, though we did half in reverse rainbow order for a little variety.
  2. Place Popsicle Sticks: Place one popsicle stick in the center of each Dixie cup. For ours, the paint we used was thick enough to hold the sticks in place before freezing, but you can freeze for a bit first before placing the popsicle sticks if necessary.
  3. Freeze: Put all of your filled Dixie cups into the freezer and freeze until completely solid. This will take a few hours minimum, but we like to just put them in overnight to be sure they’re ready to go when we’re ready to use them!
  4. Paint to Your Heart’s Content! When you remove the frozen paint popsicles from the freezer, let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes to make it easier to remove from the cups. Pull each paint popsicle out of its’ respective Dixie cup and paint to your heart’s content!

Tips on making paint popsicles:

  • Wear Old Clothes: Even though the paint is washable, it’s always best to wear old clothes or aprons while painting.
  • Try Painting Rainbows: Have your kids try swiping the rainbow paint popsicles on their side to easily paint rainbows!
  • Experiment with Techniques: Try using the paint popsicles from different angles for different color combinations and textures.

Do paint popsicles stain?

So long as you use washable paints, the paint popsicles should not stain. The Crayola paints we used for ours cleaned up very easily, so we highly recommend those!
