This Giant Cardboard Ball Maze is a fun way for kids to recycle large cardboard boxes and packaging for a fun STEM building project!
When the holidays are done, we always have a ton of cardboard boxes and recycling. Instead of tossing immediately, when we come across a large box, we look at it as a fun recycled STEM building challenge! My 9 year old son loves mazes and so put this Giant Cardboard Ball Maze together in less than an hour with other recyclable materials we had lying around.
What’s great is that you can play with multiple kids! Both my daughter and son had fun working together to get the all through the tubes and tunnels!
What other recyclables can you use to make this Cardboard Ball Maze?
Look around your home to see what would be great to use as ball stoppers or tunnels. We used cardboard tubes, old pool noodles cut up and egg cartons! Our box already had styrofoam on it as a base but we cut additional styrofoam to create ball maze pathways. We used an old ping pong ball which worked well since this was a pretty large ball maze!
The best part about this Cardboard Box Maze is that there is no right or wrong to building it! You can use your kids’ imagination to build and refine the maze. If you don’t have a large box, you can also do a mini cardboard marble maze.

GIANT CARDBOARD BALL MAZE
Materials
- Giant cardboard box - must be shallow or you can cut down the sides
- Styrofoam pieces
- Egg carton pieces
- Paper roll tubes
- Pool Noodles (cut in half)
- Ping pong ball
- Hot glue gun
Instructions
- There really isn't any right or wrong way to build this cardboard ball maze. So we will instead give some pointers.
- Visually lay out where your recycled parts will go inside the box before gluing them on.
- Decide if it makes sense for the ball to flow through the sections and not get stuck on one end. This is an open ended maze, so there is no start or finish,, but you want the ball to be able to flow through.
- Align the recycled parts so they are spaced out. For example, don't place all the tubes on one end.
- Most of all, have fun, experiment, build and play!
