Many people know the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York as a leading institution of modern art in the world. It was founded in 1929 as an educational institution and continues to create intrigue and dialogue, while providing resources and education regarding contemporary art.
MoMA also has an online store that has a healthy children’s selection. Within the Kids section there are almost 200 products available. True to their mission, their toys lean towards the unique, creative and innovative – ones with MoMA’s artistic aesthetics that you won’t often find in mass produced toys stores.
For example, the beautiful wooden block sets that are offered in Japanese or Korean. These blocks teach reading and writing for a new language and are hand cut and hand painted out of basswood blocks. There’s also an interesting activity called “Chairs” which is one of their most popular toys. It sounds simple enough – little chairs made of compressed cardboard can be stacked and assembled, but the end results become beautiful arrangements that look like artwork. There is also a “Ladders” activity in the same vein.
There is, as you would expect, a good selection of art supplies and books offered as well. Their products are viewable by appropriate age group, so you can look for things as early as baby-appropriate items. All purchases support the MoMA, so you can feel good about contributing to an institution of learning.
