Use coffee filter and make simple spray art to create beautiful accordion hearts! A pretty valentine craft and art kids can make.

This Valentine’s Day, why not craft some sweet and colorful accordion hearts using simple coffee filters?

These DIY decorations are not only easy to make, but they also add a handmade, heartfelt touch to your home or as a thoughtful gift for someone special.

The blending of red and pink marker on the coffee filter creates a beautiful watercolor effect once sprayed with water, and the accordion fold gives the hearts a lovely, layered look.

I love how simple this Valentine craft is for kids to make with readily available materials!

How to make accordion hearts

Step 1: Flatten and Color the Coffee Filter

Begin by laying your coffee filter flat on a surface, with a piece of parchment paper underneath (to protect your table or counter from the marker that will bleed through). Using your washable markers, color the entire coffee filter in red, pink, or any color palette you like for Valentine’s Day. The design doesn’t need to be neat or perfect — feel free to scribble or color in sections. Once colored, spray the filter lightly with water. The water will cause the markers to blend together and create a soft, watercolor-like effect. Let the filter dry completely. You can either leave it out to air dry or speed up the process with a hairdryer.

Step 2: Accordion Fold the Coffee Filter

Once your coffee filter is completely dry, it’s time to fold! Starting at one edge, create a series of small accordion folds by folding the coffee filter back and forth, like a fan. The folds should be about 1/2 inch wide, but you can make them slightly smaller or larger, depending on your preference. Keep folding all the way to the end of the filter.

Step 3: Fold into a Heart Shape After you’ve finished the accordion folds, hold the folded coffee filter in half. With the folds on the outside, pinch the filter in the middle so that the two ends meet in the shape of a heart. The creases from the accordion folds will form the layered, textured look of the heart shape.

Step 4: Glue the Edges Together

To hold your heart shape in place, apply a small amount of glue along the edges where the two sides of the filter meet. Press them together gently to ensure the heart shape holds. You can also secure the heart with a paperclip or clothespin for a few minutes while the glue sets.

Step 5: Dry and Display

Once the glue has dried and your heart shape is secure, it’s time to display your beautiful creation! You can make several hearts in different colors to hang on the wall, use them as gift toppers, or even string them together for a cute Valentine’s Day garland.
