I love looking at all the art you can put on a plate or mug or any ceramic container using Sharpies or oil-based markers. I thought this would be a fun project to do with the kids. My daughter invited her friend over and it was an easy and creative playdate that resulted in some pretty neat (and functional) art to take home!
DIY Kids’ Sharpie Art on a Plate – Materials:
– Oil based markers or Sharpies (like these)
– Ceramic plates
Steps:
1. Wipe of the pates clean of dust or debris. You can also use a bit of alcohol to get them really clean.
2. Have the kids draw, scribble and doodle away!
3. Allow the ink on the plates to dry completely.
4. Place the plates in a cold oven, set the temperature to 425 degrees for 30 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave the pates in the oven for a full 24 hours before removing.
Here are the plates out of the oven. I love the creativity that this brought out. A note that the colors do fade quite a bit from the baking process. The most noticeable difference is that blues turn into greens.
The kids loved looking at their art and of course eating off them! Another tip is that these should be hand washed lightly with a cloth instead of scrubber. The ink will come off if you scrub hard. We haven’t tried dishwashing them, but I’ve heard it can work. Take a look at this helpful resource from Craftaholics Anonymous with tons of tips on Sharpie marker DIY’s.
Have you ever tried Sharpie marker projects? These would make great gift for family, friends or teachers from kids. We are definitely going to try this again with other dinnerware – mugs, bowls, and different sized plates!
