I love the idea of these cardboard stackers which I saw on Meaningful Mama and wanted to do a version using geometric colored shapes. These are so much fun for building and learning colors and shapes with your little ones! To make them extra easy, I’ve included a free printable template with 12 colored shapes so all you have to do is print them out and get started stacking.
Geometric Cardboard Shape Sculptures – Materials:
– Cardboard
– Geometric Shape Tempate (download below)
– Foam Brush
– Exacto or craft knife, cutting mat or board
Instructions:
Step 1. Print out the Geometric Shape Template on cardstock. You’ll want two sides for each piece of cardboard. Cut them out and use them as templates to trace the cardboard.
Step 2. With your Mod Podge, add a layer on top of each cardboard, then add your printed cut out shapes, with another layer of Mod Podge on top. Allow to dry, then do the other side the exact same way. The Mod Podge adheres the printed shapes to the cardboard and gives it a nice stiff and sturdy finish.
Step 3. Use your exacto knife and cut slits, you want to actually make a very thin rectangle, so the shapes can slide in and out of each other. Make sure to make the width of the cut a bit smaller than the width of the cardboard so the shapes slide in and stay put.
You’re done! Now the fun begins. Talk to you kids about the shapes and colors. Have them explore building as many different sculptures as they can.
The possibilities are endless! You can stack them wide or tall.
These were so much fun for the kids to help make, build and explore shapes with some fun learning sprinkled in.
